Smart city pilots are often built as one-off systems, which makes their data hard to reuse and their applications hard to transfer to other cities. ClouT set out to provide a common platform that connects the Internet of Things to people through online services and can be shared across cities in Europe and Japan.
ClouT (Cloud of Things for empowering citizen involvement in smart cities) developed a shared platform organised in Infrastructure-, Platform- and Software-as-a-Service layers. It managed data collection, recovery and secure storage, and exposed city data through online services for residents and city departments.
The same platform supported field trials in Santander, Genova, Mitaka and Fujisawa, so the Fujisawa waste management deployment was part of a common system rather than a custom build. That shared base made it possible to move applications between cities, as with Fujisawa’s Smiley Coupon, later adopted in Santander.
