Senior Care

🖥️ Platform

Context and problem statement

Tele-assistance has traditionally relied on the user pressing a button to call for help — a model that fails exactly when the person is unable to act. Providers wanted to move to continuous well-being monitoring, but doing so means collecting sensitive data about daily routines in people’s homes, which raises its own barrier to adoption.

Solution overview

Senior Care is an IoT platform built by Worldline that helps tele-assistance companies digitalise the services they already provide, rather than selling a new product to consumers. Each home receives a kit — a gateway, a bed occupancy sensor, a movement sensor, a door and window opening sensor, and a smart plug — whose readings flow into a rules engine. Pre-set rules translate sensor patterns into emergency alerts and unusual-behaviour alerts for the operators at the tele-assistance centre.

In the M-Sec pilot the platform was integrated end to end with the project’s security stack: sensiNact for interoperable data collection, the Security Manager for access control, the Blockchain Middleware for storage integrity, and the Marketplace for anonymised data exchange.

Functional Scope and Features

– Home sensor kit: gateway, bed occupancy, movement, door/window opening, smart plug
– Rules engine converting sensor patterns into emergency and unusual-behaviour alerts
– Operator console for tele-assistance staff, designed around existing call-centre workflows
– Sensor data export for analysis
– Integration points for external security components: access control, verifiable storage, data-subject rights, anonymised data exchange

Use Cases and Deployments

Deployed in Santander from September 2020 to September 2021 as Use Case 2 of the EU–Japan M-Sec project. Five participants from Atenzia’s existing user network received the home sensor kit, and Atenzia’s staff ran the platform in a real production environment. Operators reported that the system was easy to install and use, that they trusted the reliability of its alerts, and that spotting unusual behaviour was straightforward; participants reported feeling safer and said their privacy was never compromised.
