Challenges

Challenges are defined by cities to clearly express the urban issues they are facing. They describe specific needs and contexts, helping innovators, companies, and organizations understand the problem and propose relevant, tailored solutions.

Experimental Capacity

The city’s capacity to host pilots can be summarised as follows:

  • Population and scale: 561 203 residents on 240.65 km² (31 December 2021, ISTAT). Density ranges from more than 21 000 residents per km² in central-eastern districts such as Marassi and Maddalena to fewer than 325 per km² in peripheral zones such as Voltri and Multedo, so pilots can be tested in very different urban settings.
  • Neighbourhood-level statistics: ISTAT reports demographic and socioeconomic indicators for the 71 urbanistic zones of the municipality, which allows pilots to be targeted and monitored by area.
  • Risk data and civil protection: existing hydrogeological and seismic risk data for the city, and the Civil Protection agency’s established in-person outreach, are available as a baseline.
  • Previous experience: the city has piloted a citizen-facing risk-awareness initiative with its Civil Protection agency.
  • Space and scale for the current challenge: Genova, at city scale.

Pilots

Pilots are real-life implementations of selected solutions in cities. They allow stakeholders to test ideas in real conditions, measure their impact, learn from the results, and determine whether the solution can be improved, replicated, or scaled to other contexts.
