Strategic Vision and Achivements

Sustainability and Climate Vision

Florence is committed to climate neutrality by 2030, under its strategy “Firenze per il Clima”.

Challenges

Challenges are defined by cities to clearly express the urban issues they are facing. They describe specific needs and contexts, helping innovators, companies, and organizations understand the problem and propose relevant, tailored solutions.

Logistics, Mobility and Public Space in Florence's Historic Centre

✅ Finalized

🚲 Mobility

Florence needs to manage deliveries, access, parking and the use of public space in its historic centre as one coordinated system, so that logistics become more efficient, congestion and emissions fall, and public space becomes more usable and better adapted to heat, while respecting the centre’s heritage constraints.

Experimental Capacity

The city’s capacity to host pilots can be summarised as follows:

Population and scale: 361 619 residents on 102.31 km² (31 December 2021, ISTAT), a density of 3 535 residents per km².
Open data: the City publishes open data on resident population by district (quartiere) and age, updated monthly, which supports baselines and monitoring.
Space and scale for the current challenge: selected areas of the historic centre, at district scale.
Data: mobility, environmental and urban data are to be combined for the experimentation. Data on logistics operations, parking and environmental conditions can be generated during experimentation.
Constraints: the centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with restricted-access (ZTL) areas, which limit the interventions that can be applied. Traffic-moderation measures must comply with World Heritage regulations.
Experience: the experimentation can build on existing local and national initiatives and on the city’s climate strategy, Firenze per il Clima.

Pilots

Pilots are real-life implementations of selected solutions in cities. They allow stakeholders to test ideas in real conditions, measure their impact, learn from the results, and determine whether the solution can be improved, replicated, or scaled to other contexts.
