Sandyford Business District is a highly sealed, low-green business-park area on the outskirts of Dublin, home to a large daytime working population alongside a smaller residential community. Sandyford needs a way to identify where green-blue infrastructure would do the most good, and to convert appropriate sites into usable public space.

Description of the Challenge

Context

Sandyford Business District is a highly sealed, low-green business-park area on the outskirts of Dublin, home to a large daytime working population alongside a smaller residential community.

Specific problem

The district’s minimal green infrastructure and extensive sealed surfaces drive heat-island formation, degrading outdoor comfort and working conditions during warm periods.

Current situation and gap

There was limited green-blue infrastructure in the district, and no clear, evidence-based plan for converting sealed or underused space into climate-resilient public space.

Expected Outcomes

Specific need

Sandyford needs a way to identify where green-blue infrastructure would do the most good, and to convert appropriate sites into usable public space.

Expected outcome

– A geospatial and digital-twin approach that maps heat exposure and tree-density gaps across the district.
– The approach should support identifying and planning the conversion of specific sites into climate-resilient public space.
– Maps identifying where heat exposure and tree-density gaps are greatest, prioritising candidate sites for conversion.

Who would use the results

The council’s planning and climate-resilience teams, to decide where to convert sealed or underused space into climate-resilient public space.

Expected impact

Could support reduced heat stress and improved outdoor comfort for the district’s workers and residents, as priority sites are identified and converted.

Space for Solutions and Experimentation

Space. Sandyford Business District.

Scale. District scale, with an initial conversion site of around 0.8 hectares to become a civic park.

Data. The district’s existing sealed and green surfaces, and the engagement of the business district and the county council, available as a baseline. Heat-exposure and tree-density mapping can be generated during experimentation to prioritise candidate sites.

Experience. The area has previous experience piloting digital-twin and geospatial-mapping approaches for climate resilience.
