SmartSantander

🖥️ Platform

Context and problem statement

Modern urban planners and researchers need to test IoT technologies at a scale larger than a laboratory to ensure reliability in real-world conditions. Before SmartSantander, there was a critical lack of open, large-scale testbeds that could handle thousands of concurrent sensors and diverse communication protocols (ZigBee, GPRS, RFID) in a dense city environment.

Solution overview

Specific problems / challenges addressed:

  • Technical silos preventing the integration of diverse urban datasets.
  • Scalability issues of IoT protocols in high-density areas.
  • Need for a “risk-free” environment for businesses to test prototypes before commercial rollout.

Value proposition:

It transforms a city into an “Urban Operating System.” By providing a “ready-to-use” laboratory with 12,000+ sensors, it allows researchers to validate new algorithms for energy saving, traffic flow, and environmental protection at a scale that reflects real urban complexity.

Functional Scope and Features

  • Key functionalities: Real-time data aggregation, multihop network management, data storage (Cloud/Edge), and experimental control APIs.
  • Type of data used: Parking occupancy (ferromagnetic sensors), air quality (CO, NO2, O3), noise levels, luminosity, and GPS from public vehicles.
  • Outputs produced: Real-time city dashboards, heatmaps of pollution/noise, and API feeds for third-party app developers.
  • Innovation: The use of federated architectures, allowing the platform to connect with other international testbeds (like Belgrade and Guildford) to share data and experiments globally.

Use Cases and Deployments

  • Main use cases: Smart Parking, environmental monitoring (air/noise), augmented reality tourism, and public transport optimization.
  • Deployment examples: Santander (Spain) as the primary hub; also extended to Belgrade (Serbia) for environmental monitoring on buses.
  • Scale of application: City-wide (Metropolitan).
