ICCS is the research institute of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. Its distributed systems group builds blockchain, smart contract and data marketplace infrastructure for smart cities, including the components that secured the Santander home monitoring pilot.
Based in Zografou, Athens, ICCS (Institute of Communication and Computer Systems) is affiliated with the National Technical University of Athens and works across edge-to-cloud computing, data-intensive applications, energy-efficient computing and technology transfer. It runs several research units, a Technology Transfer Office, innovation hubs and an ICT incubator, and hosts spin-off companies.
In the EU–Japan M-Sec project, ICCS researchers led the blockchain and marketplace strand — the middleware that anchors data hashes on-chain to make tampering detectable, and the smart-contract marketplace through which anonymised IoT data can be exchanged. That work was published as a peer-reviewed study on combining blockchains, smart contracts and sensor management platforms for an IoT data marketplace.
ICCS works to move research results out of the laboratory and into operational systems, combining academic depth in distributed computing with technology transfer into European projects, spin-offs and public infrastructure.
