Challenges

Challenges are defined by cities to clearly express the urban issues they are facing. They describe specific needs and contexts, helping innovators, companies, and organizations understand the problem and propose relevant, tailored solutions.

Experimental Capacity

The city’s capacity to host pilots can be summarised as follows:

  • Population and scale: 119 604 residents in 2025 (61 066 women and 58 538 men), 417 more than the previous year; the population has grown from about 105 900 in 2000 (Comune di Trento, statistics office).
  • Statistical monitoring: the city publishes an annual demographic analysis, “Trento in cifre”, which supports baselines for pilots.
  • Site: intersections in Trento, with scope to extend to further intersections. Camera infrastructure and video feeds at the test intersections provide the raw input.
  • Scale and constraints: site scale, initially two intersections; experimentation is limited to a small number of intersections rather than city-wide deployment.
  • Previous experience: edge-AI approaches to intersection-risk detection have previously been tested at two Trento intersections with research partners.

Pilots

Pilots are real-life implementations of selected solutions in cities. They allow stakeholders to test ideas in real conditions, measure their impact, learn from the results, and determine whether the solution can be improved, replicated, or scaled to other contexts.
