Context
Parque de las Llamas is a large public park in Santander, described as one of the city’s green lungs and significant to the well-being of its inhabitants.
Specific problem
The municipality’s existing smart city information offered limited detail on environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, CO2, volatile organic compounds) and estimated visitor numbers across different areas of Las Llamas Park.
Any sensor deployment in the park also needed to protect visitor privacy and resist tampering or malicious interference with the data collected.
Current situation and gap
Environmental and visitor sensing in the park had not been combined with secure, tamper-resistant data handling.
Low-cost IoT deployments often give limited guarantees that collected data has not been altered.
Specific need
The Municipality of Santander needs to gather trustworthy environmental and visitor-count data from Las Llamas Park, securely and without compromising visitor privacy.
Expected outcome
– A privacy-preserving environmental and visitor-counting sensor network with tamper-resistant data handling.
– The approach should give the municipality reliable park-condition data it can share with interested parties, without identifying individual visitors.
– Reliable, tamper-resistant environmental and visitor-count data that the municipality can draw on and share, without identifying individual visitors.
Who would use the results
The Municipality of Santander, for park and public-space decisions, and other interested parties granted access to the aggregated, anonymised data.
Expected impact
Could provide better evidence on park conditions for municipal decision-making, in an approach that might extend to other parks and public spaces.
Space. Parque de las Llamas, Santander, with scope to extend to other public spaces.
Scale. Park scale.
Data. Environmental and visitor-count sensor data can be generated during experimentation, to complement the information the municipality already holds.
Constraints. Low-cost sensor accuracy and calibration against reference-grade equipment needs ongoing attention.
