Founded in 1972, the Universidad de Cantabria (UC) is a comprehensive public university located in Santander, Spain. Recognized as a Campus of International Excellence, it consistently ranks among the top Spanish universities for research quality and scientific productivity. The university serves as a vital bridge between academic innovation and industrial application, particularly through its School of Industrial Engineering and Telecommunications.
In the smart city domain, UC acts as a Technology Provider and Co-design Partner. It is the leading force behind SmartSantander, a massive experimental facility that integrates over 12,000 sensors into the city’s fabric. This allows the university to test “Future Internet” technologies at a scale impossible in traditional lab settings, making it a global hub for IoT experimentation and urban digital transformation.
UC’s mission is to generate and transfer high-quality knowledge to contribute to social progress and sustainable development. Its vision is to consolidate its position as a “Region of Knowledge,” transforming Cantabria into an internationally recognized center for innovation. In the context of smart cities, UC strives to create a seamless integration between technology and citizen needs, ensuring that data-driven solutions improve urban livability and administrative transparency.
The university addresses the challenges of urban density and resource management for city administrations and citizens:
The university champions a “Living Lab” methodology. Their innovation lies in the deployment of Massive Heterogeneous Sensor Networks (combining fixed sensors on streetlamps with mobile sensors on buses and taxis). They use a Three-tiered Architecture (IoT Nodes, Repeaters, and Gateways) to ensure data from thousands of devices can be aggregated and analyzed in real-time, even in complex metropolitan environments.
