RealSim developed Ireland’s first publicly accessible 3D web viewer for a local authority. This laid the foundation for the award-winning VR 3D Planning Consultations platform. The platform allows citizens to experience proposed developments in virtual reality. Residents explored plans for Balbriggan Harbour improvements using VR headsets. Traditional architectural plans became intuitive 3D experiences. Consequently, public understanding and engagement improved significantly. Fingal won both the Overall Winner and the Smart Cities Category awards.
The VR 3D Planning Consultations platform changes how cities interact with residents. Citizens engage directly with proposed urban development projects. They explore future changes in immersive, interactive detail. Mary Egan, Fingal’s Director of Digital Services, praised the collaboration. She noted that RealSim’s technology improves accessibility and public participation. Furthermore, judges at the Ireland eGovernment Awards highlighted the platform’s innovative approach to civic transparency.
Fingal also won the Education Category award for VR for Libraries. The initiative places VR headsets in five county libraries. Users explore immersive educational experiences with support from VR champions. This project extends digital access to diverse community audiences.
